Casio G-Shock DW-5000R Origin Revival
The Casio G-Shock DW-5000R Origin Revival (DW-5000R-1A) is an everyday sports watch from Casio: a 42.3 mm Stainless-steel inner/centre case case, 13.1 mm thick and 48.9 mm lug to lug, with a battery quartz digital Casio Module 3576 movement and 200 m water resistance.
Going by its 48.9 mm lug to lug, it should sit within the flat top of a wrist of about 6.6 inches (16.9 cm) or larger.
Research found it at $200 list in the US (checked October 2026) and about $160 used (October 2026).
This is the square shape where G-Shock started, and square is the only G-Shock I like.

What the research found
These are the research’s judgments, scored against Holden’s priorities, not his own words.
Strengths
- The closest re-creation of the 1983 DW-5000C yet made, and Casio's own definitive reissue rather than a third-party tribute — authenticity is absolute
- Historically correct construction: stainless-steel inner case with a mirror-polished threaded screw-lock caseback, unlike the four-screw resin-cored modern squares
- Made in Japan at Yamagata Casio, the original G-Shock "mother factory"
- Real engineering upgrades over the 1983 watch where it matters: Super Illuminator LED backlight (replacing EL) and ~5-year CR2016 battery life
- Compact, wearable square case (42.3 mm × 13.1 mm, 48.9 mm lug-to-lug, 76 g) that reviewers say suits smaller wrists — unusual among rugged digitals
- Extremely legible, simple four-button operation with none of the menu sprawl of premium solar/Bluetooth squares
Weaknesses
- Objectively similar-looking G-Shock alternatives (DW-5600RL at roughly £99, GW-M5610U with Tough Solar/atomic at roughly £135) cost far less; the premium buys history rather than capability
- No Tough Solar and no Bluetooth/atomic timekeeping
- 13.1 mm thick
- Bio-based resin bezel and strap are the wear-out parts; black resin can polish, harden or crack over decades and needs periodic replacement
- Nostalgia-dependent appeal — reviewers note many buyers will simply not see the value over a cheap square
- Only 200 m-class rugged-digital versatility: no dress, no mechanical interest, no occasion range beyond casual/sport/travel
