One of Holden’s Grails
Grand Seiko Shunbun
The Grand Seiko Shunbun (SBGA413) is an everyday sports watch from Grand Seiko: a 40 mm High-Intensity Titanium case, 12.8 mm thick and 47 mm lug to lug, with an automatic 9R65 movement and 100 m water resistance.
Going by its 47 mm lug to lug, it should sit within the flat top of a wrist of about 6.4 inches (16.2 cm) or larger.
Research found it at $7,200 list in the US (checked August 2026) and $6,285 used (August 2026).
Spring Drive and one of the best dials Grand Seiko makes, so it's a Grail for me.

Will it fit?
A watch wears comfortably when its lugs stay on the flat top of the wrist. Here is the 47 mm lug to lug against the flat top estimated for common wrist sizes.
| Wrist | Flat top | Fit |
|---|---|---|
| 6 in 15.2 cm | 47 mm | At the edge |
| 6.5 in 16.5 cm | 51 mm | Comfortable |
| 7 in 17.8 cm | 55 mm | Comfortable |
| 7.5 in 19.1 cm | 59 mm | Comfortable |
| 8 in 20.3 cm | 63 mm | Comfortable |

What the research found
These are the research’s judgments, scored against Holden’s priorities, not his own words.
Strengths
- The 62GS bezel-less case is the reason to buy this rather than a Snowflake: 40.0 mm across a 47.0 mm lug-to-lug and 12.8 mm thick, versus the Snowflake's 41.0 / 49.0 / 12.5 — a materially better-proportioned watch for most wrists [1][18]
- Grand Seiko explicitly designs the bezel-less structure to reduce visual thickness and admit light from multiple angles, so the 12.8 mm number wears thinner than it reads and the dial gets more to work with [1]
- A dial with a real, specific story — hana-ikada, blossoms floating on a river at the spring equinox — inside a coherent twenty-four-sekki series, not a colourway [1][2]
- 9R65 Spring Drive at ±1 s/day and 72 hours with no battery: engineering that materially improves the object rather than decorating it [1][11]
- 102 g all-in titanium with Zaratsu polishing — a rare combination of tool-watch weight and dress-watch finishing [1][6]
- Serviceability is unusually transparent for a proprietary movement: Grand Seiko publishes a US price list and an official interval, so the long-term cost is knowable rather than guessed [12][11]
Weaknesses
- No clasp micro-adjust on a $7,200 watch — raised independently by four sources and the most consistent complaint against the reference [6][7][4][10]
- Pin-and-collar bracelet links rather than screws, and no factory quick-release; 21 mm is an awkward aftermarket strap width [7][13]
- End-link-to-case tolerance reported as loose enough to see and feel, which is a poor look at this price [7]
- MSRP has climbed from $6,300 at launch to $7,200 without a corresponding product change — the value proposition is materially worse in 2026 than it was in 2019 [3][1]
- No lume at all; genuinely unusable in the dark [4]
- Titanium marks more readily than steel and owners report the clasp interior scuffing from normal bracelet contact, with a boutique calling that wear normal [19]
