Seiko Field GMT
The Seiko Field GMT (HDB002) is a GMT travel watch from Seiko: a 39.4 mm stainless steel case, 13.6 mm thick and 47.9 mm lug to lug, with a 4R34 movement and 100 m water resistance.
Going by its 47.9 mm lug to lug, it should sit within the flat top of a wrist of about 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) or larger.
Research found it at $450 list in the US (checked October 2026) and about $390–410 on the street (October 2026).
A Seiko field watch with a GMT is very close to exactly what I want, which is why it's near the top of my list.

What the research found
These are the research’s judgments, scored against Holden’s priorities, not his own words.
Strengths
- A genuine mechanical caller GMT from a major brand at $390–450 — very little competition at this price
- Compact field-GMT dimensions: 39.4 mm diameter, 47.9 mm lug-to-lug, sensible 20 mm lug width
- Ivory/Desert Sand dial gives the line real personality; press consistently prefers it to the green and older black versions
- Excellent legibility — big lumed Arabic numerals, inner 24-hour track, engraved 24-hour bezel
- Bare stainless steel throughout with no colour coating to fail over decades
- Very cheap and easy service path: Seiko quotes $176 for a 4R overhaul, and the 4R/NH family has enormous parts and independent-watchmaker support
Weaknesses
- 13.6 mm thick on a non-diver field watch — it wears taller than its diameter suggests
- Curved Hardlex, not sapphire, and no anti-reflective coating
- Wide factory accuracy window (+45 / −35 s/day) — honest but unremarkable
- Seiko's own manual warns the movement may be replaced rather than repaired during overhaul — awkward for a 30-year heirloom plan
