Holden’s take

This is the watch that got me into watches. I didn't buy it first, but it was my original grail and it's probably my favorite overall, so it's never leaving. The stock leather strap isn't great, so I'm looking at an FKM rubber strap or a better leather one.

What the research found

These are the research’s judgments, scored against Holden’s priorities, not his own words.

Strengths

  • Distinctive heritage design with a real story (1959/1995 Alpinist lineage) and its own identity
  • 6R35 with 70 h reserve, sapphire, 200 m, 4,800 A/m — strong tool spec for a field watch
  • Compact 39.5 x 46.4 mm footprint wears well as an adventure watch
  • Made-in-Japan J1 execution with display caseback

Weaknesses

  • 13.2 mm thick for a field watch (cyclops and display back add height)
  • Cyclops and display caseback are divisive versus the cleaner SARB017 look
  • Lume reported weaker than dive-line Prospex (anecdotal)
  • Used value sits well under MSRP, so buying new is poor value
