What the research found

These are the research’s judgments, scored against Holden’s priorities, not his own words.

Strengths

  • Genuine technical spectacle: autonomous GPS timekeeping, solar power, perpetual calendar to 2100, in a 12.0 mm titanium case
  • Sharp execution for the class - super-hard-coated titanium, faceted octagonal bezel, sapphire, Smart Adjuster clasp, 110 g
  • The 3X62 simplification (one sub-dial, clean dial) fixed the cluttered look of earlier Astrons [5][7]
  • At ~$1,300 street it is dramatically more watch-tech per dollar than at $2,200 MSRP

Weaknesses

  • Electronics obsolescence is the core risk: proprietary GPS module, solar cell and secondary battery are all Seiko-service-only items
  • 48.5 mm lug-to-lug integrated case limits wrist range and strap options
  • Emotional pull is technological rather than mechanical - no craft story to service over decades
  • 100 m WR is fine but the integrated design makes it a single-mode watch
