What the research found

These are the research’s judgments, scored against Holden’s priorities, not his own words.

Strengths

  • Uncoated steel throughout
  • The embossed waffle tapisserie dial is the most-praised element in the price class and reads as far more expensive than the watch is
  • 10.93 mm thick with a 44 mm case lug-to-lug — genuinely thin and compact for an integrated-bracelet automatic
  • Powermatic 80.111 with Nivachron: 80-hour reserve, antimagnetic hairspring, hacking, and the most widely serviceable Swiss automatic platform in existence
  • Fully refinishable: scratched steel can be brushed back, which no PVD PRX can offer

Weaknesses

  • Butterfly clasp has no micro-adjustment — the most consistent criticism of the PRX and a real daily comfort limitation with no factory fix
  • Weak lume across the board, with the indices charging noticeably worse than the hands
  • White date disc breaks the colour discipline of the blue dial
  • Press-fit exhibition caseback is awkward to open without marking it, and the crown is push-pull rather than screw-down despite the 100 m rating
  • The 12 mm proprietary strap interface severely limits third-party strap options
  • The Powermatic 80's synthetic pallet fork and escape wheel are a recurring enthusiast objection, and the movement is commonly exchanged rather than rebuilt (anecdotal)
